A friend made me aware of a leaflet being circulated by Eastlands Homes, the housing association which operates mostly in east Manchester, to their residents regarding changes to welfare. On page six it says:
Can you really afford Sky, cigarettes, bingo, drinks and other non essentials?
If your benefit is being cut and you want to keep your home you have to make up the difference. Non-essential items won’t matter if you lose your home. Start budgeting now – we can help you do this, call us!
Pretty disgusting from a provider of social housing. They obviously got a fair few complaints, as they have published ‘An Apology’ this morning. In it they half-apologise “if our article offended you”, and if they worded the stark choices ahead “clumsily”. All of which suggests they don’t get why it’s more than just ‘offensive’.
